Incredible Results at the Gymnastics Competition!

We think Thornton School may have had the biggest group of students competing—and they definitely made their mark!

Our Year 1 & 2 team of Ellie, Harlow S, Kirra, Valentina, and Harlow A had a fantastic first experience, with many of them competing for the very first time. A huge congratulations to Kirra, who placed 1st overall, and to the whole team who finished 3rd in the teams event!

The Year 3 & 4 team of Ella W, Isabella, Isla, Katie, Bonnie, Briar, and Ella S performed brilliantly, taking 2nd place overall as a team, with Isabella placing 3rd overall—well done!

Our Year 5 & 6 team of Georgia, Phoebe, Addi, Mila, and Savannah brought home an amazing 1st place in the teams event, and a special shoutout to Mila, who placed 3rd overall.

A proud moment also for our Year 5 & 6 MAG representative Ollie, who looked so strong and confident performing on the floor—ka pai, Ollie!

Our Year 7 & 8 team of Elena, Emily, Kensy, and Pippa absolutely smashed it, taking 1st place in the teams event, and with Kensy placing 1st overall—an incredible result!

It was an amazing day out for all of our gymnasts. Thank you so much to the parents who came along and supported our students—you helped make it a day to remember!

What a season it's been! Our senior netball team has wrapped up a challenging but rewarding season, and we couldn’t be prouder of their effort and progress. Throughout the term, every player showed huge improvement in their skills and teamwork, all while keeping a fantastic attitude.

A massive congratulations to Emily B, Pippa, Kensy, Cohen, Georgia, Emerson, Imogen, Phoebe, Emily W, and Lilla—our dedicated team who turned up every Saturday, played their hearts out, and always kept it fair and clean on the court. You’ve done yourselves and our school proud!

We’re excited to let you know that Icon Photography will be holding family photo sittings at Thornton School on Sunday, 10th August.

Each sitting costs just $15 and includes a FREE 10" x 13" (253mm x 330mm) print of your family! You’ll also have the opportunity to purchase additional prints if you wish.

This is a wonderful chance to get a beautiful family photo while supporting a great cause. All proceeds will go towards Room 5’s camp to Mi Camp at Lake Whakamaru in December.

Over the weekend, Sammy-Te Orini Tutua-Fullick stepped into the ring for her first Muay Thai fight at the Forged Fitness Grassroots Fight Show in Rotorua—and what an incredible debut it was!

At just 11 years old, Sammy took on 12-year-old Sophie Hartfield in a tough 3 x 2-minute round bout under Muay Thai rules. After a hard-fought match, Sammy came away with her first win by unanimous decision—an amazing result that reflects her dedication and discipline.

Sammy has been training hard at Rogue Training Centre under Head Coach Jerry Stensness, focusing on both Jiu Jitsu and MMA. All that effort truly paid off this weekend!

But the journey doesn’t stop here—Sammy is off to Japan this September (18th–21st) to compete in the World Jiu Jitsu Championship. What an exciting opportunity, and we’re all behind her as she takes on the world!

Well done, Sammy—you’ve made your school and community incredibly proud! 🌏🥋💪

Penelope Armstrong who is in Room 1. She was named player of the month for her Soccer team. Congratulations Penelope!!

Adam received player of the day having scored two goals in his last soccer game and coming off the field covered in mud after playing in wet conditions.

Well done too, to Harlow Smith who was player of the day for her soccer team.

Year 1 and 2

Edgecumbe came up against Ohope Marlins in Saturdays game. The Edgecumbe team worked together as a team and controlled much of the game, coming out narrow winners. Player of the day went to Harlow for showing great determination and skills.

Year 3 and 4

We had a very even and hard game against Awakeri Avalanche.  The team played well and even the though the score  was 3-0 to Awakeri it really didn't reflect how even the game really was.   I believe we had the best game we have had all season and everyone came off the field looking like they had given there all. Both Ava and Liam got stuck in and earned themselves player of the day.

Year 5 and 6

The team worked hard and chased everything and at times dominated the game but were unable to convert their shots at goal.

Youth Team

A hard fought game against WHS Development and the team showed huge improvement and great passing between team members and had a committed defence. They went down 1-0. Player of the day was Barnaby who was everywhere tacking and feeding the ball on.

Just a quick reminder to please check your child’s hair regularly for head lice (nits). These pesky visitors can spread quickly, so early detection and treatment really helps keep them under control for everyone.

If you do find any, there are some great treatments available from the chemist, and we’re happy to help with advice if needed.

Some pharmacies (chemists) can help your children (aged 2 and over) and adults with free treatments for headlice (kutus), scabies, boils, infected bites, grazes and school sores thanks to funding from Te Whatu Ora.  It is important to treat minor skin infections early to avoid spreading to others or becoming more serious.

Sore throats matter and can lead to rheumatic fever
Rheumatic fever is a disease which causes inflammation, especially of the heart, blood vessels and joints.   If you are Māori, Pacifika or if you have a family history of rheumatic fever you are more at risk of developing rheumatic fever from a sore throat.

If you are high risk and get a sore throat, we recommend your throat is swabbed and treated with antibiotics to prevent rheumatic fever. The antibiotics will help get rid of the bacteria from your throats called Group A strep which can cause rheumatic fever.  We can also swab and treat whānau of high-risk Tamariki with sore throats.
