Edgecumbe Junior Hockey
Game day: Saturday 3 May
Last weekend we had our first Saturday hockey matches with all our teams playing well and great to see what we have been practising over the last few weeks being used in the game.
Year 1 and 2
The first hit off for the funstick went very well with lots of enthusiasm, the Edgecumbe team played most of the game on attack with plenty of scoring opportunities. Good skills shown by all with breakaway runs by Daniel and Kirra in particular. Well done Edgecumbe!
Year 3 and 4
What a great game we had against Apanui Taniwha's. With quite a few new players, there was some nerves at the start of the game but it didn't take long for the team to remember what they practised and apply it to the game. We had plenty of breakaway runs down the field and goals scored with the team coming away with an 8-0 win! Well done team!
Players of the day: Ella Davey (Thornton School), William Lanza(Thornton School)
Year 5 and 6:
The team fought hard against a more experienced Awakeri side and the second half showed huge improvements when the team started to gel together and play as a team. Isabel scored two goals in the second half and Ollie had many shots fired at him as he bravely defended the goal.
Player of the day: Ollie Erdbeer (Thornton School)
Youth team:
A fantastic game played by the Youth team on Wednesday night where they lost 1-0 to Whakatane, a more experienced and older side. They are showing great promise at adapting to 11 aside hockey. They came off the field with smiles on their faces wanting to play more.
Player of the day: Daniel Meyer (Otakiri School)
