Dear Parents   

On Wednesday 6th August, all of our school children are going to the beach area along the coastline on the Eastern side of the Rangitaiki river, to plant coastal plants on the dunes as part of our school’s commitment to the environment. We will be joined by Amy Hurren – Contractor to Coast Care.

CoastCare provides us with spades. However, if your child brings a spade or hand trowel, please make sure it is named and be aware that often children lose these on the sand dunes.

We require help with transport and planting. Leaving school at 9.10am and will be back at school by lunchtime – 12pm.  Please fill in permission form and if you are offering to help with transport please complete the necessary questions.

Students are to wear their uniform and suitable footwear (sandshoes or gumboots). An outside jacket if it is cold.

We’re excited to let you know that Icon Photography will be holding family photo sittings at Thornton School on Sunday, 10th August.

Each sitting costs just $15 and includes a FREE 10" x 13" (253mm x 330mm) print of your family! You’ll also have the opportunity to purchase additional prints if you wish.

This is a wonderful chance to get a beautiful family photo while supporting a great cause. All proceeds will go towards Room 5’s camp to Mi Camp at Lake Whakamaru in December.

Nominations are open for the election of 5 parent representatives to the school board.

 

Attached is a nomination form which all eligible voters will receive. Use this form to nominate yourself or someone in your community. You will also receive a nomination cover letter calling for nominations. Information on who is not eligible to be a board member is provided with the nomination form.

 

If you need more nomination forms, contact the school office.

 

Nominations close at noon on Friday 8th August 2025.  

You may provide a signed candidate statement and photograph with your nomination.

 

The electoral roll is held at the school and can be viewed during normal school hours.

 

As nominations are received, there will be a list of candidates’ names kept at the school up until election day, which you can view.

They’ve ordered plenty, so no one will miss out.

Just a reminder – students are still welcome to wear the original uniform shirt until the end of 2026.

 If you’re out and about and see a Thornton School student doing something amazing outside of school—whether it's in sports, the arts, community work, or anything worth celebrating—we’d love to hear about it! Sharing these moments helps us recognise their achievements and celebrate the incredible talents in our school community.

Seussical Jr Rehearsals in Full Swing!
Rehearsals are well under way for our September production of Seussical Jr, and the excitement is building! We've been lucky to have Sam McLeod working with us over the past two weeks, and after just two days with our cast, the progress is amazing.

Our monkeys, elephants, birds, Whos, fish and Things are all bringing their characters to life with energy and enthusiasm. The singing is sounding wonderful, the dancing is looking sharp, and the whole production is starting to come together beautifully.

We can’t wait to share this colourful, musical adventure with you in September!

We still have space in our Recorder Group taught by our music teacher Rachel Hands. If you child would like to join in they will need to purchase a Recorder from school for $20. Please contact the office at kirsten@thornton.school.nz

The Pharmacy Healthy Skin (Kiri Ora) service is FREE 

 

Some pharmacies (chemists) can help your children (aged 2 and over) and adults with free treatments for headlice (kutus), scabies, boils, infected bites, grazes and school sores thanks to funding from Te Whatu Ora.  It is important to treat minor skin infections early to avoid spreading to others or becoming more serious.

Sore throats matter and can lead to rheumatic fever
Rheumatic fever is a disease which causes inflammation, especially of the heart, blood vessels and joints.   If you are Māori, Pacifika or if you have a family history of rheumatic fever you are more at risk of developing rheumatic fever from a sore throat.

If you are high risk and get a sore throat, we recommend your throat is swabbed and treated with antibiotics to prevent rheumatic fever. The antibiotics will help get rid of the bacteria from your throats called Group A strep which can cause rheumatic fever.  We can also swab and treat whānau of high-risk Tamariki with sore throats.
